Regory Otieno is the third beneficiary of the 1,000 € Scholarship that StudyPortals awards every quarter. He is originally from Kenia and has been selected from over 1,800 applications to receive the Scholarship awarded in the first quartile of 2014. He impressed us with his amazing dream to obtain an education and convinced us with the extaordinary efforts he has been making to succeed in his studies.

Gregory is currently studying Corporate Finance and Management at the University of Economics in Prague. This is what he wrote to us when we announced the happy news:

“My choice to study abroad was motivated by the fact that I have always loved diversity and meeting and working with students from different cultures and backgrounds. During my high school studies in Kenya, my interest in studying abroad, especially in Europe, grew stronger and that led me to apply to several Universities across Europe. I had to prepare for entrance exams and finally I got acceptance letters from several Universities in Switzerland, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Norway and Czech Republic.

My greatest challenge was funding my studies, especially coming from a poor family. I did not let circumstances to limit my dreams and so I tried to find financing but I did not succeed. I finally volunteered and worked with many non-profitable organizations and from there I got good contacts and made friends with volunteers from countries in Europe.

I got an invitation to visit Czech Republic from my volunteer friends and during my 3-week stay I managed to visit their Universities, at the same time I started learning Czech language. When I went back to Kenya, I had made up my mind that I wanted to study in Czech Republic. I applied for and managed to secure a Czech government scholarship to study Czech language for a year.

During this year at language school, I took the entrance exams at the University of Economics in Prague and got accepted. The challenge remained the same, funding my study after my Czech language scholarship was over. So I decided to save most of my money and I registered with Czech film agencies in Prague that provide film extras to the movies and commercials that are shot in Prague. I saved all the revenue from a few commercials that I participated in and paid the tuition fee at the University. I also relied on contributions from relatives and well wishers to pay for my health insurance and visa requirement.

Now that I have been awarded the StudyPortals Study Abroad Scholarship, I feel relieved and I plan to channel all the money to pay for tuition fee for my second year of study. I am so excited and grateful to Studyportal for their Study Abroad Scholarship and words cannot express how I feel.”

Congratulations Gregory! We wish you success in your studies and later in life and we hope that your story will inspire others to choose (for) education.
